10 potential attackers Leeds United could sign

|

It’s going to be a summer of change once again for Leeds United. I still think we need four to six players to even think about competing for a top half finish.

We could go into a season without any natural wingers for the second consecutive year. January last year looked promising when we signed Cameron Stewart and Jimmy Kebe. Both failed miserably – Kebe is back at Crystal Palace and Stewart has joined Championship side Ipswich Town.

We also need a “replacement” for Ross McCormack after his £11 million move to Fulham.

Here are 10 players we feel who would dramatically improve the side, bringing either goals or width – both of which we need.

The first of these players is none other than the infamous Gary Mackay-Steven.

1) Gary Mackay-Steven

The 23-year-old Scottish winger currently plays for Dundee United in the SPL. He is highly rated and it was rumoured for the past two transfer windows that we were interested in him. It was also thought that a Football League club had a bid turned for the winger recently. With Leeds desperately lacking width Mackay-Steven would be an excellent signing, a tricky winger with pace, something we have missed since Gradel.

2) Jordan Ibe

Jordan Ibe

Jordan Ibe is a well-thought of winger at Liverpool. At 18 he has loads of potential. He has bags of pace and can go by his man with ease. He’d be a bit of a gamble as there’s no guarantee he’s up to standard but I think he’d be worth a punt.

3) Chris Humphrey

Chris Humphrey
Chris Humphrey is a winger currently at Simon Grayson’s Preston, he has been linked with Championship clubs before but after an average season last year he looks set to stay there. However he has had plenty of good seasons before at Motherwell, Reading and Celtic were both very interested in him. He may not be my number one choice but considering our lack of width that he would solve, he would be a decent signing.

4) Luciano Becchio

One we all know, Luciano Becchio. Despite not playing properly for over a year I believe Luciano would be a good signing. He loved it at Leeds and definitely knows where the goal is. Signing Luciano would divide the fans but I’m sure that debate would be settled with goals. We’d also probably need some wingers to go with him.

5) Mirco Antenucci

Antenucci was linked for quite a while recently. The Italian striker, on loan at Temana last season from Catania, scored 19 goals in Serie B. At 29 there is probably be better options but he’d be a decent option for a few years.

6) Andy Delort

Andy Delort

Not a player you would expect to be linked with Leeds. Andy Delort is a 22-year-old French player currently playing in their second tier for Tours. During their previous campaign Delort finished as the joint top goalscorer managing 24 goals. Any deal for him looks unlikely however, as he has been linked with the Champions League runners-up Atletico Madrid, as well as Shalke 04 and Southampton.

7) Troy Deeney

Troy Deeney

A player that I doubt would come to Elland Road, given Leicester have recently tabled a £6.5 million bid – but what a signing he would be, especially at this level. Last season he managed 24 goals and the season before he managed 19. Given the opportunity he scores easily, his size makes him a handful for opposing defenders. Deeney scored three goals against us last season, two at Elland Road and one at Vicarage Road. I honestly can’t see him wanting to come to Leeds, given that it wouldn’t be a step up for him and that he wouldn’t want to move away from London.

8) Anthony Stokes

25-year-old Stokes has spent the majority of his career in the Scottish Premier League where he has featured for Falkirk, Hibernian and Celtic. He has also played for English sides Sunderland, Sheffield United and Crystal Palace, where his scoring record wasn’t so great. Stokes has scored 91 league goals during his career and would be a very good signing for any Championship club, in my opinion. For me he’d be a good enough replacement for McCormack but I doubt if he was to come to England he would want to play in the Championship. Celtic would probably ask for an extortionate amount of money as well, money that we won’t be willing to spend that’s for certain.

9) Nathan Delfouneso

Nathan Delfouneso

Delfouneso had great potential when he was being brought through the Aston Villa academy but his progression has been halted in the last couple of years. He has been loaned out many times to Championship clubs, yet in 155 professional appearances he has managed just 32 goals. Not the kind of player you want as a replacement for someone who almost managed that last season alone. Recently released by Villa it was linked that he was going to be training with Leeds but those rumours seem to have died down. Who knows if Cellino might take a punt on the 23-year-old.

10) Max Gradel

There’s not much Leeds fans don’t know about Max Gradel. The Ivorian was a fans favourite during his two-year spell at Elland Road. He was a player that would make you stand up and get excited, his pace was electrifying. Would he come back to Leeds? He’s been linked with a move back to England and if Leeds can stump up the cash then why not. Would you want him back? It has been three years since he left and he has had plenty of injuries, so he might not be the same player.

I’d give my vote to all but Humphrey. I have seen him play in international matches for Jamaica and he is not that good. Top of that list for me is Ibe. He has pace, runs at defenders, and is currently playing fearless… something we need. I have no idea what his crossing is like but I wouldn’t imagine too many that can miss Matt Smith… of course maybe there are… However, I’d say we need about 4 of those players you have listed. Currently, I am just concerned about the supposed snag with the Vivani transfer. I know it was a preseason match but if he backs out due to us not even playing a decent game against Mansfield… then any other quality Italian players that would do well in Championship will not be wanting to play for us. All that said, if I got to pick 4 on that list, my 4 picks would be- Ibe, Mackay-Steven, Delort, and Delfouneso.

You ruled some of these out in your captions… how could they be potential targets then? c’mon now lad.

    • LeedsAllOver says:

I don’t think they’re likely but they’d be good signings and it’s not impossible.

  • White moron says:

All you’ve done is listed rumours that have been around for ages….boring

We aren’t ITK like certain people on twitter, we can’t tell you names that we don’t know.

  • Jack Schofield says:

FC Dallas’ Castillo, Victor Andrade from benfica and ronan, a fluminense left back! Ideal!

  • Bailey says:

Good point Jack, on Victor Andrade. Lighting quick player.
