5 things to take from the Hull victory

Well what a fantastic result for Leeds on Saturday. I don’t think you can take anything away from that performance and it’s an important three points that were thoroughly deserved. Here are five things to take from the game…

4-5-1 works with the right people
Looking at the team when it was revealed, you could tell we were going to play with a three-man midfield, it was just a question of Mowatt or Cook out left. I wanted to see Botaka out there but the result proved Steve Evans made the right decision. Our midfield bossed it at the weekend. Liam Bridcutt was fantastic in the holding role, a player who brought attributes we’ve needed for so long. Tom Adeyemi put in his best performance in a Leeds shirt and Lewis Cook’s just Lewis Cook. His through ball to Dallas for Leeds’ opener was Premier League class.

Tom Adeyemi was great in a more advanced role
As I said previously, I thought it was Tom Adeyemi’s best game in a White shirt so far. He flourished being allowed to play a more forward role. He got his goal and covered an unreal amount of ground. Defensively he worked well with Bridcutt which is also promising.

Given the service, Chris Wood will score
It’s been debated all season long but with wingers and good service, Chris Wood proved that he can grab the goals. A deft flick of the boot for his goal showed real quality, the quality that made us pay the £2.5 million fee in the Summer. I really hope Wood can kick on from here, he should easily be able to bag 20 goals for us, especially if we can play like we did in the first half on Saturday.

The first half
It was, for me, the best half of football I’ve witnessed since the Simon Grayson days. I thought we were outstanding, from Silvestri to Wood. There were edgy moments but overall we were completely dominant. The pressing from Wood and midfield was great, Hull weren’t given a moments rest and seemed to cave in under pressure. We had to grind it out in the second half but fair play to Silvestri and the back four for holding out until the end. If we can just repeat the first-half for the full 90 next weekend against Charlton that would be fantastic.

While we’ve moved 6 points clear of the bottom three, we’re only 7 points off the top 6
It’s going to happen every time we get a win but the play off’s really aren’t that far out of our reach. The main thing for now is that we’re only six points clear of the bottom three and hopefully the Hull win can be our platform to move up the table. Our next three games are winnable, there’s no doubt about it but we need to start putting these performances in more often.
