Going into the our previous meeting against Huddersfield earlier in the season, Leeds came into the game following a victory against Cardiff City with the game being remembered for Alex Mowatt’s thunderous winner. The game was a poor first half which saw a long stoppage following an injury to Liam Cooper after our captain clashed heads with team mate Scott Wootton. During the 8 minutes stoppage time Leeds United sprang into life with goals from Mirco Antenucci and Chris Wood sending Leeds into a 2-0 first half lead. The second half, and the third goal, is the reason this game will be remembered after Alex Mowatt scored his second stunner inside 4 days as he unleashed a left foot rocket into the top corner to send Leeds on their way to the fourth successive West Yorkshire derby victory.

Leeds United arrived into the game following on from last season’s performance of the season with the stunning 3-1 victory away at Bournemouth. Leeds took the lead early on when Rudolph Austin scored after twenty minutes. Mirco Antenucci scored in first half stoppage time after finishing off an incisive Leeds United counter attack which saw Giuseppe Bellusci sublime chip come off the crossbar for Antenucci to volley home. Leeds wrapped up the victory in the 69th minute when Souleymane Doukara made it 3. The game ended on a sour note when Gaetano Berrardi was dismissed for his second bookable offence.

Whilst the Neil Warnock Leeds United era hasn’t got many memorable moments, this is without doubt the one that stands out for me and in recent memory was one of my favourite away days. The game didn’t start as planned for Leeds who went behind on 13 minutes from Atkinson’s goal. Two quick goals turned the game in Leeds favour as Alex Smithies gave us our annual helping hand by conceding a soft shot as Michael Tonge equalised for Leeds and Luciano Becchio put Leeds 2-1 up just 2 minutes later. Former Leeds player Adam Clayton equalised from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute and then went and celebrated infant of Warnock who just the previous season had sold Clayton and dismissed his talent as being not good enough for Leeds United… Leeds had to wait till the 70th minute to re take the lead as David Norris fired home in the 70th minute before Leeds cult hero Luciano Becchio wrapped up the game in the 86th minute to send Leeds home with 3 valuable points.

How to even begin to sum up the events going into this game… Whilst the change over from GFH to Massimo Cellino was ongoing, we didn’t expect any incomings on deadline day, but what we got that night was nothing short from farcical. No matter the stance of the fans, the club was in complete meltdown that night, from fans chasing Cellino around Elland Road inside a taxi, the taxi company tweeting the fans to stop as the car was low on fuel, McDermott sacked and Gianluca Festa put in charge and changing the team, Andrea Tabanelli.. Remember him? Being signed and brought into the club despite the league not knowing anything and of course, our captain going on Sky Sports to give a phone interview… I think that covers everything. On match day, there was no sign of Festa and Neil Redfearn took charge of the team with McDermott having been sacked, who bizarrely was re-instated by owners GFH during half time with a statement sent to the press… On the pitch however we got what I remember being one of the last real Leeds United displays, the game didn’t start well Huddersfield took the lead on 25 minutes through Ward. Then, the Huddersfield fans took to mocking McCormack and singing about Leeds falling apart again… Cue, the typical Leeds United performance sparking into life. McCormack equalised in first half stoppage time. The second half, was a brilliant Leeds performance as Jimmy Kebe put Leeds 2-1 and then captain McCormack scored in the 62nd and 73rd minute to complete a hat trick before Alex Mowatt would go onto score a brilliant lob and score his first professional goal for the club. This game will always be remembered of the wrong and the right reasons but whatever the circumstances, this was a brilliant Leeds performance.

Leeds beat Huddersfield 3-1 in the FA Cup winning season which ultimately saw Leeds fall just short of completing the double. Whist we can’t go too much into depth about this game as we only have the basic stats it is a game which shaped a small piece of the Leeds United future and most supporters will remember that this is the game that saw Gary Sprake, our long time number 1 goalkeeper pick up a knee injury and would see recently transfer listed goalkeeper David Harvey be removed from the transfer list and get a chance to play for the club. Harvey of course went on to play in goal for many years for Leeds United and play in the FA Cup final that season.
